Grok is an AI-powered chatbot developed by xAI, a company founded by Elon Musk. Announced in late 2023, Grok is positioned as an AI with a unique personality inspired by "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"—possessing humor, sarcasm, and a "rebellious streak." A key differentiator for Grok is its ability to access real-time information from the X (formerly Twitter) social network, allowing it to provide answers on current topics and events, unlike many other LLMs trained on static data. Grok is designed not to shy away from controversial or "spicy" questions that other AI systems might refuse to address. Technically, Grok-1 (the first model version) is based on a Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architecture with 314 billion parameters, although only a fraction are active during inference, enhancing efficiency. A significant move was the open-sourcing of the base Grok-1 model weights and architecture in March 2024 under the Apache 2.0 license, making it available to researchers and developers. However, this open-source model lacks real-time X data access and the specific fine-tuning of the version used within the X platform product. Access to the Grok chatbot itself is currently integrated into the X platform and offered to Premium+ subscribers. Beyond text capabilities, multimodal versions (Grok-1.5V) capable of processing visual information have been announced.
